The Names of God
Everything has a name and the character of a person lies behind
the Name. A Person’s Name is the Person, and is extremely important.
God is the only one who has the Name above all Names!
Philippians
2:9
“God exalted Christ Jesus and gave Him the Name above all Names, that
at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess
that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the Glory of God the father.”
We will be looking at various names as we discover the Tabernacle
Names like God, The Lord, Emmanuel, Messiah, and Saviour of the
world.
Our focus will be on the name and title, which John saw and recognised
when Jesus Christ was walking by. John made this statement when he saw Jesus.
John 1:29
“Behold the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world”
Our focus will be upon that lamb throughout this entire study.
Hebrews 2:7
“We see Jesus, who was made a little lower than the angels, now crowned
with Glory and Honour because He suffered death, so that by the grace of
God He might taste (fully experience) death for everyone(without exception)
Who then is God, and what is He like?
Since God exists He has to reveal
Himself to us. We are completely dead in our ability to understand God.
We are said to be Spiritually Dead with no ability to understand or to comprehend
anything of spiritual phenomena. To Understanding God then we need an interpreter
who speaks God’s language and our language, which happens to be English.
That interpreter is also God who knows every language under the Sun, and
can speak to everyone, simultaneously, to each individual whatever his or
her nationality, colour, creed, religious upbringing, culture, custom or
any human understanding.
God describes who He is.
The world is full of enough man made definitions about God. God
has not left it to the human imagination and goodness, to define and describe
Him. These man made attempts to define God are called religion.
Religion is completely Evil and Satanic to the core. Religion is
a person who is seeking to please his or her own imaginative idea of God,
based on a do good self image. This all boils down too a system of self-idolatry,
self-flattery and self-worship. Using his God given reasoning power a person
thinks “I’m good enough for me, so I must be good enough for God too”. As
far as the east is from the west, nothing could be further from the Truth.
We cannot understand God, so God defines Himself and reveals Himself
to us. How has God revealed Himself to us? God reveals Himself to us by
His Word and His Creation. God uses human language, so we humans have a
frame of reference to understand who God is.
What does God say about His Word?
Hebrews 4:12
“The Word of God is alive and powerful.
Sharper than any two-edged sword, penetrating even to the dividing soul
and spirit, joints and marrow; it judges the thoughts and attitudes of the
heart. Nothing in all creation is hidden from God’s sight. Everything is
uncovered and laid bare before the eyes of Him
to whom we must give account.”
Isaiah
55:11
“My Word goes out from My mouth, it will not
return to Me empty, but will accomplish what I desire and achieve the Purpose
for which I sent it.”
Jesus Christ, The Lord say’s, that
He is The “I Am”
Isaiah 46:1
“I Am God, and there is No Other. I am God
and there is None Like Me. I make known the end
from the beginning, from ancient times, what is still to come. I say: My
purpose will stand, and I will do all that I please”
Revelation 20:6
“I am the Alpha and Omega, the Beginning and the End”
Jesus Christ is God the Creator
Genesis 1:1
“In the beginning God created the heavens and the earth”.
This
is what the Lord says, he who created the heavens. He is God. He who fashioned and made the earth. He did not create it to
be empty but formed it to be inhabited. I am the Lord and there is No other.
Isaiah 42:5
“This
is what God The Lord say’s- He who created the heavens and stretched them
out, who spread out the earth and all that comes out of it, who gives breath
to it’s people, and life to those who walk on it”
Isaiah 42:8
“I
Am The Lord; that is My Name”
“Who among the god’s is like You, O lord.
Who is like You – majestic
in holiness, awesome in glory, working wonders? In your unfailing love you will lead the people
you have redeemed. In your strength you will guide them.”
“Havah” is one of the Hebrew names God
calls Himself, from which we get the word “Jehovah or Yahwe”
- The self-existent One. In other Words, no one or nothing made me. I created,
but I was not created. I have always existed and will always exist, as such
God is Spirit, Infinite and His actions are Absolute. In contrast we are
both physical, spirit, finite and very relative.
The Name “Jehovah is a redeemer
name. When sin and death entered the world of mankind, redemption was imperative
and necessary of God and for us all. God had a problem He must solve. He
has to pay the redemption price to free us from the prison of sin and death
if He wants our company forever.
Ephesians 1:7
“In Him we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins,
in accordance with the riches of God’s grace.”
As Jehovah He has a number of different
Names
in
the Old Testament.
“Jehovah Shammah” – The Lord is there
(Ezekiel 48:35)
“Jehovah Rapha” – The Lord that heals
(Exodus 25:26)
“Jehovah Tsidkenu” - The Lord our righteousness
(Jeremiah 23:6)
“Jehovah Shalom” – The Lord our peace (Judges 6:24)

“Jehovah Jireh” – The Lord will provide
(Genesis 23:13-14)
“Jehovah Elohim” – Lord God – Elohim being a plural word emphasizes His plurality
From the last statement we learn that God exists and
He exists in a plurality.
