The 10 Plagues on Egypt

Aaron’s staff becomes a snake and swallows the Egyptian magicians and sorcerer’s snakes, when they also turn their staffs into snakes.

Exodus 7:1-13

1.        FIRST PLAGUE: THE NILE WATERS TURN TO BLOOD

Exodus 7:14-24

Nile, the river of Egypt, was one of many of the Egyptian idols. The Nile’s waters nourished the land and set the welfare of all the people.

2.       SECOND PLAGUE: THE FROGS

Exodus 8:1-15

The frogs represented the fertility goddess, Isis, which was supposed to help women give birth. The frog that symbolized life becomes rotting piles of death.

3.       THIRD PLAGUE: THE LICE

Exodus 8:16-19

The lice lived out of the dust of the earth and represented the Egyptian god of the earth. By their large numbers, they made a terrible plague on Egypt.

4.       FOURTH PLAGUE: THE FLIES

Exodus 8:20-32

The flies carried a sting, and ruined the land. Beelzebub, the prince of the power of the air, has been glorified as the god of flies. This fourth plague affected only the Egyptians.

5.       FIFTH PLAGUE: THE DISEASE OF LIVESTOCK

Exodus 9:1-7

This disease affected only the Egyptian livestock. The Egyptians believed animals were possessed by the spirits of gods. The bull was sacred in Egypt, identified in it markings to their god Apis.

6.       SIXTH PLAGUE: THE BOILS

Exodus 9:8-12

God sent a plague that seized and attacked their own bodies. Sores in the body were looked upon as punishment for sin. a means by which to call to repentance. None of the Hebrews had any boils. This plague was a direct attack on the shamanism of the medical-mystical processes in Egypt at the time.

7.       SEVENTH PLAGUE: THE HAILSTORM

Exodus 9:13-35

Moses gave the people one-day to prepare for this plague. The sorcerers of Egypt were also agricultural shamans who thought they could control the weather. Those who feared the Lord went inside (God had mercy on some of the Egyptians). Many did not take refuge and died. Their vegetable plots along with their harvest were destroyed. This plague did not harm the Israelis

8.       EIGHTH PLAGUE: THE LOCUSTS

Exodus 10:1-20

Pharaoh’s people, his magicians, and advisors rebelled. Pharaoh was alone against God. Moses stretched forth his rod over the land of Egypt, and the LORD brought an east wind upon the land all day and all that night.  When it was morning, the east wind brought the locusts. The locusts went over all the land of Egypt, and stayed in all the coasts of Egypt: They never had a plague like this one with so many locusts. This plague devastated the land and the power of the gods of agriculture. Pharaoh sent for Moses and pretended to repent. He asked Moses to pray to God to take the locusts away. And the LORD turned a strong west wind, which took away the locusts, and dumped them into the Red Sea; No locust remained in Egypt.

9.       NINTH PLAGUE: THE DARKNESS

Exodus 10:21-29

The Egyptians rebelled against God’s Word and they were punished with darkness. This thick darkness was over all Egypt for three days, but the people of Israel had light where they dwelt. The children of Israel lived in light while Pharaoh and his people lived in the darkness. It was a total darkness and very painful. This plague was an attack on the power of the supreme deity of Egypt, the sun god Re. Even then, Pharaoh refused to recognise the Lord.

10.    TENTH PLAGUE: THE DEATH OF THE FIRSTBORN

Exodus 11:1-10

The first-born son was very important to the people of Israel and the Egyptians. God said in Exodus 13:2, Sanctify unto me all the firstborn, whatsoever openeth the womb among the children of Israel, both of man and of beast: it is mine. God placed a special claim on the firstborn of man and beast. Israel attached special value to the eldest son and gave him special privileges and responsibilities.

It was now that the Passover was firstly established. For more details see the feasts and special days of Israel in a later lessons.

The importance of the death of every firstborn in Egypt, from the house of Pharaoh to the slaves and the livestock, was great. Israel would be spared so that there would be an obvious seperation between those who belong to the Lord God (YAWH) and those who were Egyptians.
