The
Burnt Offering
This Sacrifice emphasizes Christ’s work as a person
offering Himself to God, pure and without spot or blemish. The sacrifice
is a sweet savour offering to God.
God is completely satisfied with work of the sacrifice
of the person of His only Son, Jesus Christ. Read Leviticus 1 – The burnt
offering & Leviticus 6:8-13 The Law of the burnt offering for extra
rules related to this offering.
- The animals to be sacrificed were to be taken from the herd, flock
or fowl and had to be a male without any blemishes or defects.
Jesus Christ was born
a man and was perfect, just as Adam was a man and created perfect. Speaking
about Christ, the scriptures say:
1
Peter 2:22 “He committed no sin, and no deceit was found in His mouth.”
- Jesus Christ came voluntarily, as His Father sent him voluntarily.
Philippians 2:7 “Jesus Christ, who being the very
nature God--- made Himself nothing (of no reputation), taking the very
nature of a servant, being made in human likeness and being found in appearance
as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to death, even the death
on a cross!”
- The animal was offered from the offerer’s own volition (Free will).
Here the Sovereignty
of God provides the sacrifice and the free will of man must accept the
sacrifice offered, to be completely effective for a person.
- The hand of the offerer was placed upon the head of the offering, so
transferring the sin from the offerer to the sacrifice. The offerer then
killed the animal.
- The blood was sprinkled against all the sides of the alter indicating
the work of Jesus Christ was sufficient and available for all.
Isaiah 45:22
“Come to Me
and be saved, all you ends of the earth; for I Am God and there is no
other.”
- The animal
was skinned and cut into pieces. Jesus Christ was cruelly treated at the
hands of sinners, as prophesied in the Old Testament.
John 19:1
“Pilate took Jesus and had Him flogged.”
Isaiah 52:14 “His appearance was so disfigured
beyond that of any man and His form marred beyond human likeness.”
7. The parts
were laid upon the altar and burned with fire, indicating that Jesus Christ
received God’s
judgement, in our
place.
8. The innards
and legs were washed before being offered indicating that Christ had no
worldly pollution and defilement
and was qualified as God’s acceptable offering for sin.
9. The entire
animal was burnt on the altar. Christ’s sacrifice of Himself for us was
complete effective and total. The
same was done for the offering from the flock.
10. If the offering
was from the fowl its neck was wrung off and the blood was drained out on
the east side of the
altar. The feathers were plucked and the crop removed and cast to the side
of the altar, where the ashes were.
